How to tell if a Pokémon card is fake
Before buying an expensive card, a few simple checks catch most fakes. No app can guarantee it 100%, but these tells help a lot.
1. Number and set
Check the printed number and set symbol. If that combination doesn't exist, or a scanner can't find it, be careful. Scan it with PriceSpot and compare the official image with yours.
2. Font
Fakes often have a different font weight, odd accents or typos in attack text.
3. Colours and back
Compare the back with a card you know is real: fakes are often lighter or more purple and less sharp.
4. Holo pattern
Real holos have a specific pattern for each era; many fakes shine all over or use the wrong pattern.
5. Light test
Shine your phone torch behind the card: real cards have an inner layer that lets little light through.
6. Thickness and feel
Fakes are often thinner, glossier or stiffer.
7. The edge
Up close, many real cards show a dark inner line on the edge.
8. The price
If it's far below market price, be suspicious. Use PriceSpot's "Just check" mode to compare the asking price with Cardmarket before you buy.
